This week’s recipe is a spooky one… it has eight legs, beady little eyes and it can be frightening to some folks. Oreo spider cookies is the featured treat and when a photo of one crawled across my computer a couple of weeks ago, it was all I could do not to swat at my computer screen.

I’m not a fan of any kind of spider — alive, dead or even in the form of a cookie — but this recipe is for the little ones. So, let’s just say I’m taking one for the team with this sweet and salty snack.

Despite my distaste for spiders, the end product, a spider made from Oreos, chocolate-covered candies and pretzels sticks, is actually really cute. It’s sure to be a hit with the kids in your life.

The last thing I will say about this recipe is that it travels well. How many times have you spent hours making the cutest cupcakes or cookies for you child to share with their classmates, only to arrive to your destination with the icing everywhere?

These cookies won’t make an icing mess and to see the reactions on children’s faces when you pull out a cookie that looks like a spider is priceless.

Have a safe Halloween.

Oreo spider cookies

One package of Oreos Halloween Orange Creme Cookies

Reese Pieces Peanut Butter candies

Pretzel sticks, broken into halves

Nutella or chocolate frosting

Arrange the Oreos on a large baking sheet or serving plate.

Insert pretzel sticks into the filling of each Oreo, making sure you have four sticks for each side, to create the the legs of the spider.

Spread the Nutella or chocolate frosting on the ends of the spider legs using a spoon.

Spread a thin layer of Nutella or frosting on the back of each of the candies and place candies on top of the Oreo cookie for the eyes.

Tip: If you have black licorice, you can use that instead of the pretzel sticks to make the legs. Or use red M&M’s for the eyes instead of the Reese’s Pieces candies.
