Covington man charged in violent rape

COVINGTON — A Covington man has been arrested and charged in connection with a violent sexual assault against a female acquaintance.

According to Newton County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Jeff Alexander, Justin Hamby, 25, of 60 Woodfield Road, was arrested Oct. 16 and charged with rape, pointing or aiming gun at another, aggravated assault and aggravated sodomy.

Alexander said that Hamby and the victim had only recently become acquaintances.

“He and the victim, who is not from Covington, had been talking on the phone for about a week,” the investigator said.

He said the two made arrangements to meet somewhere in town, which was when the alleged assault occurred.

Hamby remains in the Newton County Detention Center.
