Fatality, hit-and-run crashes reported in Newton County Saturday morning

20-year-old Covington man killed in one-vehicle crash

COVINGTON — A 20-year-old Covington man was killed and his female passenger was injured in a one-vehicle crash early Saturday morning, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

GSP Trooper Gordy Wright said the crash was reported at 2:30 a.m. on Ga. Highway 212 near Oak Hill in Newton County when a 2005 Chevrolet Impala driven by Tucker Craig Hankins left the road in a curve and hit a tree.

“A passenger in the vehicle was partially ejected, had to be extricated, and was transported to Atlanta Medical Center,” Wright stated in a press release Saturday. “According to the investigating trooper, speed, drugs and alcohol all appear to be factors in the crash.”

The passenger was a 20-year-old woman from Covington.

Wright said blood tests are pending.

Troopers are also looking for a white Toyota that struck a pedestrian Saturday morning around 12:30 a.m. on Brown Bridge Road at Hardwood Drive and then left the scene. The victim, a 19-year-old man from Conyers, was taken to Atlanta Medical Center for treatment of injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening, Wright said.

The collision is believed to have occurred in the roadway, he said.

The model and year of the Toyota are not known at this point, but the vehicle involved will have damage to the front passenger side area at the turn signal assembly and the vehicle will also be missing the passenger side mirror, Wright said.

Anyone with information on the vehicle may call the Georgia State Patrol office in Monroe at 770-464-1800 or the Newton County Sheriff’s Office at 678-625-1400.
