Lady Eagles advance with sweep over Redan on the road

COVINGTON — Region 8-AAAA No. 3 seed Eastside softball team won the first round of the softball tournament run-ruling Redan 10-2 and 12-3 on the road on Wednesday.

Eastside’s Caitlin Ray tossed both games getting the wins. She had 15 strikeouts in the doubleheader while allowing one walk, hitting two batsman and giving up seven hits.

The Lady Eagles had a hard time getting used to the abnormally slow pitching from Redan as they only had four hits in the first game. But once they got the timing down the bats came alive as they had 15 hits to in the second game of the doubleheader.

Sydney Mask and Molly Moon paced the Lady Eagles in the second game at the plate with three hits each followed by Alexis Dubucio, Madison Whitsitt and Ray with two hits each. Getting the hits in the first game were Taz Powell, Madison McCrorey, Whitsitt and Moon.

The Lady Raiders took advantage of being at home as they jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the first inning. They held the lead until the third inning when a Madison Hopper sacrifice fly allowed Ray to cross the plate to tie the game at 2-all. Moon broke the tie and gave the Lady Eagles the lead when her double plated Mask to make it 3-2.

Eastside began seeing the ball better and started taking advantage of several Redan miscues scoring four runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth as the Lady Eagles defense tightened up keeping the home team off the scoreboard.

The Lady Eagles put no doubt the mind of the Redan players and they unintended to sweep the series scoring five runs in the bottom half of the first inning of the second game to take a 5-1 lead. After extending the lead to 6-1 in the third inning, the Lady Raiders closed the gap 6-3 after their at-bat in the top of the sixth inning.

Even though Redan came close, the Lady Eagles were not about to give them a chance ending the game in the bottom of the sixth inning by scoring six runs.

The Lady Eagles advanced to the second round on Wed., Oct. 23 when they travel to Ringgold to face Heritage, Catoosa. The Lady Generals swept Carrollton beating Carrollton 2-0 and 5-0.
