COVINGTON - There are plenty of resources out there for senior citizens, but many may not know where to go to get help. That’s why Newton County Senior Services is hosting a Grandparent Fest and Senior Expo for all county residents age 55 and older on Oct. 25.
“The main purpose of us doing this, it’s either our ninth or 10th year, is so we can get some resources out to the senior population and also to let them know that we’re here at the Senior Center,” Reed said. “Even though it’s tough, because we’re pretty much overcrowded now, we can help, and if we can’t do it, we can offer them resources to help them.”
The event takes place from 10 a.m. — noon at Turner Lake Complex, located at 6183 Turner Lake Road SW in Covington.
Vendors with products for seniors and programs that provide resources such as transportation and home-delivered meals will be on hand. A representative from GeorgiaCares will answer questions about changes to Medicare and a representative from State Sen. Ron Ramsey’s office will provide information about the Affordable Health Care Act.
Newton County Health Department will provide flu shots and blood pressure screenings. Seniors who want to get the flu shot should bring their Medicaid or Medicare cards.
There will also be quilts, ceramics and jewelry for sale and door prizes and raffles. The event is free and open to all local seniors.
Lunch will be provided for $4 per plate from noon to 1 p.m. Entertainment during lunch will include comedy, tap dancing and musical acts by members of the Senior Center.
