Defending state champ drills Salem for fifth straight win

The struggles continued for the Salem football team Friday in Hall County. Gainesville continued its offensive onslaught and cruised to a 58-8 victory in Region 8-AAAAA play at Bobby Gruhn Field.

Gainesville (6-1, 5-0), the defending Class AAAAA state champion, has won its first five league games consecutively by an average margin of more than 49 points.

Meanwhile, Salem’s tailspin continues. Since scoring the third-most points in school history in a 60-37 victory over Winder-Barrow to even their record at 2-2 and 1-1 in region play, the Conyers school has lost three consecutive league games by a combined score of 129-30.

Luckily for Salem it has off next weekend, while Gainesville will travel to Athens to play Clarke Central in a battle of two of the region’s three unbeaten teams (Flowery Branch is the other).

Luella 28, Rockdale 14

Luella (2-1) pulled a half game ahead of idle Alcovy (1-1) for third place in the Region 2-AAAAAA with the victory. Rockdale dropped its second consecutive league game to fall to 1-2.
