After showcasing an impressive offense in a blowout victory over Winder-Barrow, the Salem football team came back down to earth last weekend.
There is no “community of nations.” There are individual nations with individual interests. If the United Nations could bring peace and prosperity to the world, progress toward that goal should have been made by now. Instead, 68 years after its founding, wars and rumors of wars are increasing.
The passion of the community has propelled the Miracle League project from conception to reality, even through challenging economic times. Before the field opens next spring, that community support is being sought once again to build the county’s first universally accessible playground in the Miracle League complex at City Pond Park.
Covington-Newton County United Way is off to a good start with its fundraising campaign this year. Publix on Brown Bridge Road has already pledged $35,000, said United Way Executive Director Doris Strickland. With 180 employees, many of them part-time, Strickland said that’s an impressive pledge, adding that Publix supplements employee payroll deductions with a corporate donation.
