Heritage softball completes sweep, region final next

CONYERS - Just one win left to secure for the Heritage softball team. Kierra Camp tossed a five-inning no-hitter and was one of three Patriots with two RBIs in a 9-1 victory over Winder-Barrow in game two of the Region 8-AAAAA semi finals.

Heritage (23-5), the league’s runner-up a year ago, swept the best-of-three series and will host the winner of Loganville-Apalachee in Thursday’s region championship game.

After collecting just three hits in a shut out loss to Camp in an 8-0 loss in the opener, Winder finally scored its first and what turned out to be only run of the series without the benefit of a hit in the second inning of game two. Leading off the frame, Cathleen Nugue polished off an eight-pitch at bat with a walk and runners were at first and second after a Bree Lynn fielder’s choice didn’t produce an out. Erin Glockson popped up bunt for the first out, but Camp threw consecutive wild pitches, the last of which chased home Nugue to get the Bulldoggs to within 4-1. That would turn out to be the closest the visitors would come in the series.

In the top of the third, Carri Wilkerson got the second of her run-scoring singles, Taylor Moser followed with one of her own and Heidi Shepherd picked up her second RBI-single to make it 7-1.

Camp was perfect after the wild pitch. The right-hander and Georgia Southern commitment set down the final 12 batters she faced - five coming by strikeout - and finished the day allowing three hits and the one earned run and striking out 16 in 10 innings of dominant work.

As it did in the first game of the night, Heritage scored four runs in its first at bat to gain a commanding lead.

Diamond Callwood reached on a fielding error to start the game and moved to second on a wild pitch. Addy Allegretti, Camp and Wilkerson had three straight singles that each chased home a run and Shepherd’s sacrifice fly later in the inning made it a 4-0 game.

Callwood laced an opposite field double to right-center field to open the fourth and scored on Camp’s single for the final run of the series.
