Law Enforcement Academy to host job fair Oct. 21

COVINGTON — For those interested in a career in law enforcement, a job fair has been scheduled at the Law Enforcement Academy in Covington.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday, Oct. 21, at Georgia Piedmont Technical College, located at 8100 Bob Williams Parkway.

The Law Enforcement Academy at Georgia Piedmont provides basic mandate training for those wishing to become P.O.S.T. certified in law enforcement. It is a full-time, 17-week, paramilitary-structured program that is offered three times a year.

In addition to P.O.S.T. certification, graduates also earn 42 credit hours toward a 65-hour associate’s degree in criminal justice.

Major Harry McCann, who is the director of the Law Enforcement Academy, said he usually schedules a recruiting day each semester for students where representatives with different agencies will speak for about 10 to 15 minutes at a time.

This year, however, he decided to create a job fair environment and open it up to the public.

“We decided to do it this way so that the students can spend more time with a particular department if they’re interested, but at the same time, it would open it up to the public so the agencies can meet with a larger number of potential recruits,” McCann said.

He said this will be a unique experience for the law enforcement agencies, too.

“Typically, when agencies do recruiting, they attend job fairs with other businesses that are not necessarily related to law enforcement,” McCann said. “This will be an opportunity for them to recruit from people who are specifically interested in going into that field.”

So far, McCann said, about 15 agencies have committed to attend the job fair this month, including police departments in Covington, Clarkston, Forest Park, Sandy Springs, Riverdale, Fayetteville, Chamblee, Gwinnett County, Clayton County, Griffin and Albany. Representatives from the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office, Walton County Sheriff’s Office, the state Department of Natural Resources and Georgia Tech will also be recruiting.
