Heritage softball knocks off Newton

Kamryn Toney didn’t allow an earned run in five innings and Taylor Moser drove in a pair of runs to lead the Heritage softball team to a 7-2 win over Newton Monday in non-region play.

Heritage (20-5) will host Alcovy tonight at 5:00 p.m in the regular season finale, then open the Region 8-AAAAA Tournament semi finals Monday at home.

It was Senior Night at Heritage, so coach Jason McBay batted his five senior players - King University commitment Diamond Callwood, Kierra Camp (Georgia Southern), Carri Wilkerson, Moser and Heidi Shepherd - one-through-five in the order and the quintet picked up eight of the team’s 11 hits against Newton (10-9). Meanwhile, Shepherd, the everyday catcher, started on the mound and faced one batter while playing all nine positions. McBay also allowed team manager Jasmine Freeman to dress with the team.

“We had tonight, really just to focus on the seniors, the five of them, really, the six of them, they’re really the heart and soul of our program,” said McBay, in his second season as the head coach. “They’ve been with me, two years as an assistant and the last two years (as head coach), it’s going to be hard to see them go.”

Toney, the No. 2 starter behind Camp, allowed seven hits, but no walks and struck out nine to pick up the win. Camp finished off the victory with two perfect innings.

Heritage scored two runs in the bottom of the first when Callwood was hit by a pitch, stole second and third and scored on a single by Wilkerson. Then Wilkerson followed Callwood’s stolen base approach and scored on Moser’s single.

It was 4-0 in the third when Camp (single) and Moser (triple) teamed up for a run and Shepherd followed with a single to send home Moser.

Newton cut the deficit to 4-2 in the top of the fifth, but Heritage answered with three in the bottom half on run-scoring singled by Addy Allegretti, Toney and Destiny Herrera’s RBI-triple.

“Pretty pleased with the effort (Monday),” McBay said. “Newton has a scrappy team, they are not the same team we played last year. They play hard, we had to earn everything tonight.”
