Intersection work planned at Sigman, Salem, Old Covington

CONYERS — Rockdale commissioners on Tuesday approved a contract with the Georgia Department of Transportation that will pave the way for improvements at the intersection of Sigman, Salem and Old Covington roads.

The $1.4 million grant funding agreement calls for $1,090,513 in federal funds administered through GDOT and $369,460 in local matching funds from a special purpose local option sales tax.

According to Rockdale Department of Transportation Director Miguel Valentin, the project will improve the skewed intersection angle and provide additional turn lanes on all approaches.

The intersection is located just north of Interstate 20 near the Salem Road interchange.

Valentin said the project has been put out to bid and is now going through the bid approval process.

He said the project is expected to get underway in spring 2014 and take 12 to 15 months to complete.
