COVINGTON — Sounds of the season will ring out in Conyers and Covington with upcoming musical performances that evoke the holiday spirit.
First up are annual performances presented by the 75-voice Covington-Conyers Choral Guild. Concert dates are Thursday, Dec. 5, at the First Baptist Church, 1139 Usher St., Covington, and Friday, Dec. 6, at the Rockdale Auditorium, 903 Main St., Conyers. Doors for both concerts open at 7:30 p.m. with the performances beginning at 8 p.m. Admission is $10 per person. Tickets are available at the door.
Director Roger Waters described the musical program as a “potpourri of Christmas songs and Christmas anthems.” Some of the composers that will be represented are Handel, Rutter, Saint-Saens, Wagner and Sleeth.
Waters said the compositions are both ambitious and familiar.
“Particularly the Handel and the Rutter are kind of challenging pieces, but yet they are pieces that have audience appeal,” he said. “Some of them are arrangements of traditional Christmas carols and they are done for choir and audience participation. The audiences are going to be asked to sing along on some of the carols.”
The Atlanta Boy Choir returns to the Abbey Church of the Monastery of the Holy Spirit on Saturday, Dec. 7 to continue a 33-year tradition of performances. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the concert starts at 7 p.m. The Monastery is located at 2625 Ga. Highway 212, Conyers. A reception for choir members and concert-goers will follow the performance.
This year the Boy Choir, directed by Fletcher Wolfe, will be joined by a men’s choir of some of its alumni, with the two choirs alternating pieces and then singing together. The program includes classical compositions along with traditional carols, spirituals and Latin hymns.
The choirs will be accompanied by harp, flute, oboe, violin, cello, piano and harpsichord.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children 16 and under. Tickets may be purchased online at the Monastery website at www.trappist.net.
The Monastery gift shop will be open both before and after the concert for guest shopping for unique Christmas gifts.
