Rockdale’s wrestling team is headed to one of the most prestigious in-season dual tournaments next weekend. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have done a nice job of tuning up. Eight different wrestlers went 2-0 as Rockdale swept a tri-meet from Lithia Springs and host Douglas County Friday.
Rockdale, which had already secured dual wins over county rivals Heritage and Salem, and Parkview Tuesday, will wrestle in the 16-team Takedown Sportswear Duals November 30, hosted by defending Class AAAAAA state champion Archer.
“Monday we have to get after it, we come back in Friday and get ready for (the Archer Duals). You definitely want to go up against the best teams in the state, let you know where you are and what things you need to work on and what you’re doing well. And you look at the 16 schools and a lot of the best teams in the state are there,” said Rockdale coach Craig Hargrove.
Hargrove’s bunch had no trouble with Lithia Springs in a 69-0 victory, then closed the night with a 43-27 over the hosts. Defending state champion and three-time state finalist Alonzo Allen led the unbeaten wrestlers, winning both his matches at 120 pounds. Fred Moye (113), Lenny Mejias (126), Tyrone Hearn (132), Cliff Casurra (138), Dakota Lewis (145), Sean Mer (160), Cole Lewis (170) and Louis Galindo (182) also went 2-0.
“Definitely happy with the 5-0 start and I think we’re progressing to where we need to be,” Hargrove said. “We wrestled better (Friday) than we did last Friday, progress is being made. Definitely areas where we have to get sharper, keep adding fundamentals and techniques to our system.”
