East Newton was evacuated Friday morning due to smoke scare

COVINGTON — Teachers were evacuated from the building at East Newton Elementary School Friday morning after Principal Kim Coady smelled smoke when she walked into her office.

According to Newton County School System Public Relations Director Sherri Davis-Viniard, firefighters attributed the smoke to a faulty heating unit.

“A heater fan had locked up and that’s what caused the smoke,” said Davis-Viniard.

Davis-Viniard said the incident occurred prior to the start of school, so no students had to be evacuated. Students arriving at school during the time of the incident were kept on their buses and in car lanes. After the situation was under control, firefighters gave an all clear signal, letting students and teachers re-enter the school, and the school day proceeded as normal.
