POWDER SPRINGS — Despite their best efforts, Alcovy just could not come up with the plays when they needed them as the Tigers lost to Hillgrove 41-13 in the first round of the Class AAAAAA playoffs on Friday.
“It was 13-0 and we had the ball inside the 30 twice and couldn’t score and points and that hurt us,” Alcovy head coach Kirk Hoffman said. “We had a chance to cut to 13-7 midway through the second period.”
Instead of scoring keeping the game close, the Hawks (10-1) kept putting on the pressure scoring a couple more touchdowns before the half ended.
Hillgrove made it 20-0 on a 30-yard pass by Elijah Ironside to Richard Hallman before Ironside connected with Justin Denton on a 6-yard strike with six seconds left to play.
“The score really doesn’t tell you how close the game was. We had them fourth and 20 and they throw it over the top for a touchdown,” Hoffman said. “We had a bad snap on a punt and they scored to made it 27-0 at the half.”
The Tigers (7-4) came out in the third period with a scoring drive which ended with a 10-yard run by Tristen Payne to close the gap to 27-6 with 3:43 left in the third.
Hillgrove ended up finding the endzone two moer times before Jared Farley scored on a 2-yard run with 2:44 left in the game.
“I thought we played well,” Hoffman said. “I told the kids when you get to that level of game at the playoffs and you have that opportunity to make a play you have to make it and we didn’t make it. I thought that was what hurt us.”
