No. 8 Kentucky 103, Georgia Southern 38: Bernisha Pinkett scored 19 points and Kastine Evans added 15 as the Wildcats rode a stifling defensive effort to overwhelm the Eagles in their home opener.
DeNesha Stallworth and Linnae Harper had 13 points apiece for Kentucky (3-0), which registered 24 steals and harassed Georgia Southern (0-2) into 35 turnovers en route to its 39th consecutive non-conference home victory. Samarie Walker added 12 points and nine rebounds while Azia Bishop contributed 10 points and a career-high 12 boards.
Angel McGowan scored 10 points and Briana Jones added seven and eight rebounds for the Eagles, who fell to another Southeastern Conference opponent after dropping a 10-point decision at Auburn in their season opener. MiMi DuBose, the team’s leading returning scorer from last season, was limited to three points on 1-of-8 shooting.
The Wildcats had slow starts in each of their first two wins over Marist and Wagner but scored the first 10 points and opened a 15-2 lead less than five minutes into the contest. Kentucky removed any suspense when Harper, Stallworth and Makayla Epps combined for all the points in a 15-0 blitz to make it 38-9 before taking a 49-13 lead into the locker room.
Relentless pressure by the Wildcats led to 19 turnovers and 11 steals in the first half alone. Evans scored seven consecutive points in a 9-0 burst early in the second half as the lead ballooned to 58-14 with just under 17 minutes remaining.
