Teen reports he was punched for cell phone

COVINGTON — Investigators are looking for a group of males who are believed to have punched a 19-year-old and then stolen his cell phone.

According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, the victim was standing outside his home on Fieldview Lane around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday when he saw an older model Ford Mustang with faded green paint drive up.

“Three occupants of the vehicle jumped out of the car and at least one person remained inside,” said Deputy Cortney Morrison.

The victim reported that the three walked up to him and initially asked to use his cell phone. The victim said it wouldn’t work because the cell phone battery was dead.

“The suspects then pinned him up against the wall,” Morrison said. “One took the phone and another punched him in the face.”

The victim told deputies he did not recognize the men who assaulted him. One suspect is described as a male with dreadlocks wearing all black; the second suspect is a male with short dreadlocks wearing khaki-colored jeans and a blue hat; the third male suspect was described as wearing a gray T-shirt.

Morrison said the case remains under investigation and anyone with any information is asked to contact the Newton County Sheriff’s Office at 678-625-1400 or the anonymous tip line at 678-625-5007 and online at www.newtonsheriffga.org/anonymous_tip.html.
