Special Olympics

Pet Food Drive

Rockdale County Animal Care and Control is collecting donations of canned dog and cat food, as well as used bath towels. The shelter is located at 1506 Rockbridge Road. Call 770-785-5927 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Attn. Veterans

To schedule a free van ride to the VA Hospital on Tuesdays or Thursdays when drivers are available, call Bobby Huggins at 770-787-7698 at least two days prior to any appointment.


Newton County residents only may recycle household electronics, paints and dispose of pesticides on the first Saturday of each month. No TVs or commercial wastes accepted. The Newton County Landfill will accept these items from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call 770-786-5808 for more information.

Meals on Wheels

The Olivia Haydel Senior Center needs Meals on Wheels Volunteers to run a routes once a week or twice a month, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to noon. Must provide your own transportation. Please call Melissa Pugh at 770-278-7263.

Rockdale CASA

Habitat Store

Habitat for Humanity Conyers-Rockdale operates a surplus store, located at 1117 West Ave. in the Rockdale Plaza Shopping Center. Habitat sells used appliances, electrical and electronic devices in working order, furniture, lamps, tools, etc. The store is open on Thursdays, Friday and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 770-785-7675 to request information or to schedule a donation or pickup.

Newton Reads

Volunteers are needed to help an adult learn to read or improve their math skills. Training and materials will be provided. Call Newton Reads at 678-342-7943.

Serenity Hospice

Serenity Hospice is seeking volunteers to provide companionship and support for terminally ill patients and their caregivers. Special Projects volunteers can contribute by making items, (blankets, knitting, etc.) or offering services (massages, cosmetology, maintenance, etc.). Office volunteers are also needed to assist with clerical duties. Call 678-413-2222.

Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Nancy Guinn Library are accepting book donations at their location in the lower level of the Nancy Guinn Memorial Library, at 864 Green St. Clean books in good condition are requested. The entrance to the Friends’ bookstore is located in the rear, fourth door from the left corner of the building.

Heartland Hospice

Heartland Hospice, formerly Portsbridge Hospice, is seeking volunteers to spend time with terminally ill patients. Training will be provided. Activities include listening, reading and praying or, if preferred, office or maintenance duties. Especially needed are donations of twin bedding and volunteers who can assist with office duties, mail-outs, filing and receptionist duties. Call 770-922-8767.

Library Volunteers
