Heritage cruises to win in finale, clinches playoff spot

CONYERS - The Heritage Patriots are headed to the postseason once again.

Ryan Sutton had three touchdown passes and Heritage had its highest point total in more than five years in a 47-21 victory over Apalachee at Evans Memorial Stadium.

With the win the Patriots (6-4, 5-3 Region 8-AAAAA) not only clinched the No. 4 seed and a first-round date with the Region 6-AAAAA champion in the round of 32 November 15, but also secured a program-record fourth consecutive state tournament appearance.

Sutton had touchdown tosses to Obe Fortune for 20 yards, Emanuel Smith (five yards) and Greg Craddick (18), in helping Heritage score its most points since a 51-13 win over Winder-Barrow in September, 2008.

Heritage will now await the champion of Region 6, which could be unbeaten Tucker, Mays or Stephenson, depending on the outcome of the Mays-Stephenson game late Saturday and the final weekend of the regular season starting November 7.

In the Friday win, which dropped Apalachee to 0-9 for the first time in the program’s 14-year history, the Patriots also got rushing touchdeowns from C.J. Stone (20 yards) and Kevin Simpson and Christian Blade, who each scored from three yards.
