Piedmont holds 43rd commencement exercises

MONTICELLO -- Piedmont Academy's Class of 2013 participated in its graduation ceremony Sunday.

This year, 24 seniors graduated from the Monticello school during its 43rd commencement exercises.

The valedictorian is Carley Elise Cain, and this year, the school had two co-salutatorians, Lanie Elizabeth King and Kacy Swart, who all received plaques and medallions. Additionally, 12 other students graduated with honors.

Six students were awarded with "Lifetime Cougar" certificates for attending the school since kindergarten: Swart, Nicholas Wade Dimsdale, Caroline Louise Strickland, Samantha Kathryn Ramsdell, Glade William Tuggle and Heather Lauren Tyler.

Graduate Audrey Cleary gave a solo performance, accompanied with her acoustic guitar, singing "Never Alone" by Gary Burr, Sarah Buxton and Victoria Shaw.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mitch McEwen, and school Headmaster Tony Tanner presented the graduates with their diplomas in accordance with the requirements of the State of Georgia and the by-laws of Piedmont Academy.

Students plan to attend such post-secondary schools as the University of Georgia, Mercer University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and the Georgia Military College to study areas like radiology, aerospace engineering and business, among others. A student also plans to enlist in the U.S. Air Force.

The Class of 2013 received $420,000 in scholarship offers by such entities as the Chase Cain Memorial Scholarship, the Embry-Riddle Scholarship, the softball program at Georgia Military College and Newton Medical Center, among others. Fifteen of the graduates also will receive the HOPE scholarship.

Prior to graduation, the school held for the Class of 2013 a Senior Honors Night on Thursday. Starting a new tradition at Piedmont Academy, school administrators and faculty recognized each senior and gave compliments to each upcoming graduate. Students were presented awards in various subject areas for having the highest academic averages, and nearly every student was given awards for earning dual enrollment certificates at Southern Crescent Technical College.

A plaque was presented for the Headmaster's Award to Lacy Adamson for exemplifying the mission of Piedmont Academy, embodying the qualities and characteristics of mind, body and spirit and attributes around the mission of the school.

The Outstanding Senior award was given to Lucy Strickland for being a student who was involved in school activities, demonstrated good, moral character and possesses strong leadership qualities.

This year's STAR Student, Cain, who was named such for having the highest score on the SAT, and her chosen STAR teacher, Bobbi Sauls, also were both honored with a plaque.

Piedmont Academy is an accredited member of the Southern Association of Independent Schools. The school also is a member of the Georgia Independent Association and is Student Exchange Visitor Information System approved.

The school is located at 126 Ga. Highway 212 W. in Monticello. It serves students in Jasper, Newton, Butts, Rockdale, Henry, Morgan, Walton and other surrounding counties.
