Newton schools begin summer schedule

COVINGTON -- The books are closed, the tassels are turned and the grades are in -- schools are closed for summer break.

The Newton County School System now is operating on a summer schedule.

The Newton County Board of Education building, which is located at 2109 Newton Drive NE in Covington, and the system's Service Center will be open to the public from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays until July 12.

The board office will return to the regular hours July 15.

All Newton County schools will be closed for students' summer vacation. They will reopen in time for student registration, which will take place at all schools on Monday, July 22, through Friday, July 26, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Over the summer, the Newton County Board of Education is expected to meet on an altered schedule.

The school board is expected to meet June 25 and July 16 for a combined meeting; the board typically meets twice a month for a work session and a regular monthly meeting. All school board meetings are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the board room at the Newton County BOE building, which also is located at the Newton Drive location.

Teachers and staff are expected to report back to schools on July 25 (new teachers), July 29 (elementary teachers) or July 30 (secondary teachers) to begin the 2013-14 school year, which begins Aug. 2 for students, according to the calendar posted on the NCSS website, www.newtoncountyschools.org.
