Denmark named Heritage boy's hoops coach

Conyers -- Ralph Denmark has been named the head boys basketball coach at Heritage High School, athletic director Chuck Landy confirmed Saturday.

Denmark had been the assistant on the boys basketball staff at Rockdale the last five seasons and helped lead the Bulldogs to the state championship game in 2011. He was named the head coach after former Heritage head man Drew Williams resigned recently.

"Very excited about it," Denmark said.

"(Denmark) was ready for an opportunity and we feel like we were fortunate to get him," Landy said. "He's outstanding, he was ready, it was his turn to get a chance. We started looking and we were fortunate, we knew coach from years ago whenever he was the coach at Edwards. Really have a lot of respect for what Rockdale was able to do with their program. Everybody speaks really highly of him (and) we're excited to have him."

Before coming to Rockdale, Denmark was the assistant at Burke County High School in Waynesboro from 2002-04, then was assistant under current Rockdale head coach Al Williams at Conyers Middle School from 2004-06 and was the head coach at Edwards Middle School from 2006-08.

He moved, with Al Williams, to Rockdale in 2008. Now he'll go up against his good friend in one of the area's most heated rivalries.

"It's going to be a very exciting game, (Denmark being at Heritage) could kind of help boost the rivalry," Denmark said. "Al and I are great friends, we talk about it all the time."

Denmark has already started working with the Heritage basketball team during its summer workout sessions.

"We liked him a lot and we're able to fit him in teaching wise at our school. He started with our boys, they've already got their summer program underway," Landy said.

Denmark also played basketball at LaGrange College.
