The Newton County Sheriff's Office provides School Resource Officers to each high school and middle school in Newton County. The following is a list of reports filed by these officers that have been received by the Newton Citizen:
ALCOVY HIGH SCHOOL
-- A student reported a stolen purse on May 9.
NEWTON HIGH SCHOOL
-- On May 3, the school resource officer was informed that a cell phone belonging to a student had been stolen.
-- On May 10, two students had a physical altercation and were escorted to the front office. Both students were seen by the school nurse and the resource officer charged the primary aggressor with battery and a juvenile complaint was filed.
-- On May 15, two students got into a fight and both will be charged with affray.
CLEMENTS MIDDLE SCHOOL
-- The principal of the school called a Newton County Sheriff's Department resource office to the gymnasium around 8:30 a.m. on May 13 to investigate a disturbance being caused by several students.
VETERANS MIDDLE SCHOOL
-- On May 2 a parent called the NCSO to come to the school and when deputies arrived she said that her son had been in an altercation earlier in the day at the school an she needed a report.
FAIRVIEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
-- An NCSO deputy was called to the elementary school to make a report because sometime between May 10 and May 13 an unknown person broke an exterior window at the school. There were no signs of entry and no evidence of value left at the scene.
PORTERDALE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
-- An NCSO deputy was called to the school on May 2 where a teacher informed him that on April 28 around 11 a.m. one of the students threw a food plate on a table and the contents splashed on her. The teacher said she spoke to the student about it and was told to "shut up." When the teacher asked the student, "What did you say?" she said the student got in her face and said "I will ---- you up." The student was then escorted away and administrators were informed. The teacher said she did not want to prefer charges, but wanted to have a report on the incident.
