OXFORD -- Traveling Angels Ministries Inc. is honoring senior citizens this Saturday with its 16th Annual Mother and Father's Day Dinner.

The nonprofit is once again opening the event to all seniors in Newton, Rockdale and surrounding counties free of charge.

"We just love up on them," Traveling Angels Executive Director Ocie Cunningham said. The event takes place from 1-5 p.m. at Under the Stars, a banquet hall located at 672 Moore St. in Oxford, and will include food, entertainment and free gifts. It is provided free through donations, and typically there are more than 200 in attendance, Cunningham said.

"We have a lot of people just down and out, " she said, and the goal of this event is to lift their spirits. It's not unusual for seniors to get up and start line dancing to the music, she said.

Traveling Angels was founded by Cunningham in 1986. The organization currently has 17 board members and 30 volunteers supporting hundreds of youth and seniors in several counties, according to its website. Services provided include prayer, reading, preparing lunches, providing clothing, community activities and celebrations.
