CONYERS -- Fresh off of a trip to New York City, where they sang at the Cathedral of St. John the Apostle, the Covington Conyers Choral Guild is ready to share its talents with the local community.

The Choral Guild's 28th Annual Spring Concert takes place at 8 p.m. on May 16 at First Baptist Church of Covington, 1175 Elm St. in Covington, and on May 17 at Rockdale Auditorium, 903 N. Main St. in Conyers. Tickets are $10 at the door.

The bulk of the hour-long program is devoted to a performance of the classical choral work, "The Seven Last Words of Christ," written by French composer Theodore Dubois in 1867.

"It's a musical setting of the last seven sayings of Christ from the cross as he was crucified," said Roger Waters, director and conductor of the 80-member Choral Guild.

The 40-minute piece features guest soloists soprano Amy Patterson, tenor Ben Caston and baritone Brian Franklin.

Following the 19th century choral work are shorter selections including "We Can Be Kind," "I Believe," "Canticle of Hope," and "Shut De Do," a Jamaican work.

"The theme running in these is social unity and we're trying to send a message to our community about the need for all of us to get along," said Rogers.

Rounding out the evening will be pieces from "Les Miserables," including "At the End of the Day," "I Dream a Dream," "Castle on a Cloud," "Do You Hear the People Sing?," "On My Own," and "Bring Him Home."

Waters said he chose the "Les Miserables" music partially because of the popularity of the recent movie release but mostly simply to give listeners a taste of some familiar music.

"We have tried in years past to include some selections in our programs from Broadway musicals as a crowd-pleaser. Of course, we do very serious music and sometimes the serious music does not necessarily set well with audiences, so consequently, I try to do selections that please the crowd," said Waters.
