COVINGTON -- Georgia College senior and former Eastside golfer Taylor Smith could not overcome a tough 6,928-yard, par-72 El Campeon course on Wednesday at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla., during the three-day DII South/Southeast Region tournament.
The Bobcats started the tournament with a fourth-place finish before climbing up one notch after the second round. However, the team was unable to come back with the same intensity, shooting 25 over par with a 313. It scored a 291 on the first day before shooting a 295 on Day 2 of the tournament.
Smith, who finished tied for 55 at 13-over, started the event with a 5-over 77 before cutting three strokes off his score on Day 2 to shoot a 74. The last day was unkind for the senior, who shot a 6-over 78.
Although Smith had six birdies in the three-day tournament, it was not enough to overcome the 12 bogeys and three double bogeys he incurred.
The Bobcats' Victor Monte (73, 72, 77) led the team, shooting a 6-over 222 for the three days to finish tied for 21st overall.
Coming in second place for the team and tied for 28th with a 223 was Bryan Fox. Fox opened the tournament with a 73 before shooting a 74 and closing with a 76.
Both Ryan Trocchio and Patrick Garrett played the first two rounds in control before letting El Campeon, which translates to "The Champion," get the better of them as they finished with a 10-over 82. Trocchio finished tied for 58th (73-75-82 -- 230) while Garrett brought up the rear tied for 78th (72-79-82 -- 233).
Georgia College shot an 899 for the tournament. Nova Southeastern won the 20-team, 108-player event with a score of 855.
