Covington man wanted by Monroe arrested by Covington Police

COVINGTON -- An alert Covington Police officer took the time to check out a suspicious vehicle and in the process arrested a 23-year-old Covington man wanted by the Monroe Police Department.

The officer noticed a vehicle sitting at the entrance of Wellington Ridge apartment complex with its lights on about 1:30 a.m. An hour later, it was still sitting there with the lights still on.

"I activated my emergency equipment and positioned my police cruiser so that whoever was in the vehicle could identify that I was a police officer," the incident report states. "When I approached the vehicle, I could hear the vehicle running and observed the windows fogged up."

The officer said he could see the silhouette of a body in the driver's seat, but when he knocked on the window, there was no response. After several attempts at getting the person's attention, the front window was finally rolled down.

"I asked the male if he was OK and he stated that he was. I asked how long he had been sitting there and he seemed to be somewhat disoriented ... I observed a beer bottle in the back seat and asked the driver if he had been drinking and he stated that he had not," the report states.

The male told the officer that he had taken his girlfriend home and must have pulled to the entrance of the apartment complex and fallen asleep.

The man was identified as Reko Rashad Smith, 23, of 9333 Melanie Circle, and dispatch advised the officer, who had backup by this time, that he was wanted out of Walton County for armed robbery, hijacking of a motor vehicle and aggravated assault. There was also an advisory for Smith to be approached with extreme caution.

The officer said when he ordered Smith out of his vehicle, he began making furtive movements behind him, causing both officers to pull their weapons until they could get him handcuffed.

While searching Smith, a bag of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana was located between his underwear and his pants. Smith gave the officers permission to search his vehicle and eight bags of the green leafy substance, believed to be packaged for sale were located, as well as a black ski mask, one black glove and four cell phones.

Smith was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and a hold was placed on him for the Walton County warrants.
