COVINGTON -- A 20-year-old man was gunned down Friday night while standing in the driveway of his home in the Silos of Ellington housing complex, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.
NCSO spokesman Investigator Jeff Alexander said at this point investigators are unsure of the motive for the attack.
"This came out as a carjacking, but it's still under investigation. We don't know if it was a carjacking," Alexander said.
The man was shot in the chest and the arm while outside his home at 30 Middleton Drive. A Ford Expedition that was parked in the driveway was also struck by bullets several times.
The victim was taken to Atlanta Medical Center where he underwent surgery for his wounds. He is expected to recover, Alexander said.
He said several calls reporting shooting came in to 911 dispatch about the same time as this incident from homes on Spring Lake Terrace, but it is believed the shooting was actually taking place on Middleton Drive, a nearby street.
Alexander said the victim did not give investigators any information Friday night as to how many shooters were involved or what type of vehicle they were driving. It is hoped as he recovers, more information will be forthcoming.
In other crime news, the NCSO is searching for Erin Jordan, a 13-year-old girl who left her home on May 2.
"Our belief is she left of her own accord, but by the same token, she is a 13-year-old who is away from her parents and there is some element of endangerment."
Alexander said any and all information from the public on where she might be would be appreciated.
Anyone who has information regarding the shooting incident or the missing girl is asked to call the Newton County Sheriff's Office at 678-625-1400 and ask for Alexander or Investigator Gilbert or go to the NCSO website at www.newtonsheriffga.gov to leave a tip.
