Covington Fire Dept.'s Fire House 5K set for May 18

COVINGTON -- Time to limber up the joints and get ready to move if you're going to participate in the Fourth Annual Covington Fire Department's Fire House 5K set for Saturday, May 18.

Registration is now being accepted at Fire Station No. 1 on Pace Street or online at www.runningintheusa.com/crs or at www.active.com. Fees are $20 per runner until the day of the race and $25 on race day. Also, there is a Family and Friends package for four runners for $60. All four participants must register at the same time.

Registered participants will receive a T-shirt as long as they last on race day. For sizes 2X and larger, add $2 to the registration fee.

"We encourage the entire community to come out and take part in this event," Assistant Fire Marshal Capt. Tony Smith said. "It doesn't matter if you walk, jog or run the route as long as you're moving forward."

The race begins at 9 a.m. at the Conyers Street Gym. Prior to the Fire House 5K, there will be a 1-mile Fun Run beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Smith said the race course through downtown Covington is the "Fuzz Run backwards." Participants will depart the Conyers Street Gym and instead of going up Conyers Street, they will first go around the Square and go back to Conyers Street. The course will be clearly marked and water will be available near the 1- and 2-mile marks and at the finish.

Smith said there were between 300 and 400 participants in last year's 5K and organizers hope even more runners will turn out this year.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Covington Fireman's Memorial Trust Fund.

"This fund awards college scholarships to graduating high school seniors with priority going to fire department families first," Smith said. "We have awarded more than $40,000 in scholarships since the fund's inception and average $3,000 to $5,000 per year."

Special custom made pottery awards will be given to Overall Male/Female, Masters Male/Female and top three Male/Female winners in age groups beginning with 10 and under through 75 and over. Special awards will be given for Top Male/Female in the Public Safety category. All finishers will receive a Finisher's Medal.

All registration fees are non-refundable and can be mailed to the Covington Fire Department with checks made payable to Covington Fireman's Memorial Trust, 2101 Pace St., Covington, GA 30014.
