"Speaking as a retired taxpayer, I am appalled at the thought of my tax dollars being used to pay for a vehicle and gasoline for the landfill manager's personal use. Although I am retired from the county, I still have contact with many current employees who are equally disturbed by this ... violation of county policy. The problem was first identified last year when it was noticed that suddenly hundreds of additional dollars worth of gas was being charged to a non-emergency vehicle. Employees talked among themselves and determined who was responsible and it was due to them using a county vehicle to drive daily to and from their home. ... I can't fault our local elected officials since they took the appropriate action to disallow the personal use of county vehicles several years ago. The problem is, the county is a large operation and issues such as this can go undetected unless brought to the attention of those in charge. As taxpayers we recognize our tax dollars will be wasted by Washington, but here at home we expect more from our local government. ..."

Editor's note: Following is a response from County Manager John Middleton: "For safety and mobilization purposes, the landfill manager is required to be on call 24/7 and a vehicle is provided for that purpose -- it is not for 'personal use.' MSW landfills are highly regulated and routinely inspected by the Georgia EPD. They require constant monitoring and management of leachate systems, methane mitigation and proper erosion and sediment control, to name just a few. Essentially, the landfill is a constantly changing 200-acre-plus construction site with significant earth-moving activities and site elevation changes. The ability to mobilize key personnel in the event of an emergency or system failure is critical to the responsible management and proper operation of the landfill for our citizens and the environment."

"What is wrong with this scenario? If a male has sex with a 15-year-old girl, he is charged with statutory rape, because she is considered a 'minor.' Now, however, thanks to Obama and his administration, a 15-year-old 'woman' can purchase the Morning After Pill over the counter without a prescription or parental consent, at any drug store. America has become a modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah."

---

"What a travesty! This son of Satan who killed and maimed Americans at the Boston Marathon, is getting top legal representation, paid for by we taxpayers. Our wonderful Muslim-loving president is always giving priority treatment to radical Muslims. Where does his allegiance lie -- Muslims or the Americans who put him back in the White House? His actions on each Muslim incident prove where his loyalty is. You people who voted for him -- are you still happy with your choice?"

---

"On nearly the same day, two Americans were noteworthy. NBA player Jason Collins announced to the world he is a homosexual. Army Sgt. 1st Class Greg Robinson became the first amputee (lost a leg in combat) to complete the rigorous Army Air Assault School at the famed 101st Airborne Division. Who do you think the president of the United States called to congratulate? It wasn't SFC Robinson."

"Read the article today (May 1) on the price of gas going up. Last week I drove through Alabama and Mississippi on the way to Biloxi on Wednesday and Friday and found regular gasoline 21 cents lower per gallon (at $3.14 per gallon) all along I-85, I-65, I-10 than here in Covington. Went to Madison yesterday (April 30) and gas prices were 8 cents less. Go figure. Or is it that 'unique' and very consumer unfriendly rule that Georgia has that they can and do increase taxes on gas when the price of fuel gets higher."

---

"Why was Superintendent Gary Mathews chosen to co-host as grand marshal with Ms. Valeria Maddox when he has never come to a Special Olympic event in the past and supported these wonderful athletes? So why would we give him this honor? I do think that Ms. Maddox was an excellent choice because she has not just sacrificed a few hours but many years to our athletes and has always been there to support them in all areas and cheer them on. We miss you and love you Ms. Maddox."

---

"So while at the Highway 36 recycle site center, there appeared to be the workers' family suntanning in skimpy clothes and flip flops. They were older overweight people. Also, why are we asked to push the red button? Ain't that the job of the attendant?"---

"I was calling to voice my opinion on how disgusted I was to see the photo of the lady, Ms. David, there signing her volleyball scholarship to attend college that was in the paper this week. I really think that the Newton County Citizen and Conyers Citizen need to offer her an apology and print a new picture of the young lady. That is a very memorable event and I am sure that she would like to have a picture that she could cherish in years to come, other than the picture that was in there."

Is this comment from J. Middleton for real? A landfill employee gets to use the county car for his everyday use because he is on call?? That is a bunch of crap. What about county law enforcement employees who are on 24hr call? They do not DRIVE their county vehicles everywhere. I believe they actually have a policy against driving the cars while not "on duty" being "on-call" is NOT the same as "on-duty". Being "on-call" does not give this employee the right to drive a county car everywhere. I highly doubt he works alone either. What about the employees he supervises? If he calls them in does he go pick them up? I doubt it -I bet they drive themselves to work just like most county employees! I just am appalled that was the justification to this employee driving on tax payer gas. I would have understood had they even said "The County hasn't given its employees a raise in numerous years so they let him have a take home car" better than this "24hr on call job" crap.

The whole town is nutso. City council is pro loudmouthed signage. BOE is a train wreck. BOC seems to exhibit bipolar behavior in some seats and one has been checking into jail periodically? Seriously? The Chamber of Commerce is basically emptying out. Three employees out in six weeks and my friends in Morgan County know Baxter people who have bought homes there. Newton is a junkpile and the west side is chocked full of nuts and crime.

Have to agree on the BOE. They have had three names circulating for a month now and cannot even apparently hire a superintendent. This will be a circus I am sure. No transparency where the BOE is concerned and I heard just today of more teachers leaving NCSS.

The BOE is a lost cause. The train wreck has already happened.

Now we read of the THIRD person to leave the Newton Chamber of Commerce in what - a month or two? Shannon Davis - gone! Roger Harrison - gone! Clara Deemer now retiring after 10 years? Um you all do the math. There is someone no one can work with over there. Running off three employees in two months. Mmmm.

In response to the above comment regarding the Boston bomber and "our wonderful Muslim President" : can I take this to mean you believe our President wrote the Constitution of the United States over 200 years ago? The accused bomber is entitled to representation in his defense because of the Constitution. That has nothing to do with the President, who is NOT Muslim, by the way. Don't believe everything you see on Fox News.

Whoever said anything about the Prez being Muslim on Fox news? Some (mainly Donald Trump) has questioned his birth place but it did take an awful long time to produce a copy. Heck, no one can renew a drivers license without one - oh I forgot - limo drivers, helicopet pilots and AF1 rides every where since 2008. Unless you are hearing impaired you only hear what is said on Fox news.
