COVINGTON — A 21-year-old Covington man was killed after his car pulled out in front of a Newton County school bus.
Around 2 p.m. Friday, James Alexander Cooper’s Honda Accord pulled out in front of his residence at 12510 Ga. Highway 36, near Moore’s Road, in an attempt to make a left-hand turn.
“He pulled into the path of an oncoming school bus,” said Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright, who also noted it was a head-on collision with the bus.
The bus was transporting 16 students, plus the driver, from Indian Creek Middle School. One student complained of injury, according to Wright. Friday was an early release day for professional learning for school system staff.
“Some students were released to parents who came to the scene. Another bus was dispatched to the scene to transport the remaining students home,” said Sherri Davis-Viniard, director of Public Relations for the Newton County School System. “There is significant damage to the bus.”
Officials from NCSS, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office and GSP responded to the scene.
No charges will be filed, according to GSP.
