Newton Sheriff's Office looking into report of attempted robbery

COVINGTON — A 17-year-old youth reported to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office that six teenagers approached him on a street in the Silos subdivision Friday night and attempted to rob him.

According to NCSO Public Information Officer Deputy Cortney Morrison, the 17-year-old, who formerly lived in the area, had come to the neighborhood with his mother to visit friends. While his mother was visiting a friend on Charleston Place, he walked over to see a friend of his on Dairyland Drive.

“While he was walking back to his mom at Charleston Place, he was approached by six individuals who started walking toward him on Westfield Way,” Morrison said. “One of them asked if he knew who he was and if he lived in the area. He told them he used to, but had since moved away. Then one of the subjects told him to empty his pockets.”

Morrison said the young man told deputies he acted as if he was about to comply and then turned and ran back to his friend’s house on Dairyland Drive where he called 911.

Morrison said NCSO units quickly arrived on the scene and set up a perimeter and found three individuals matching the description the young man had given — young black men dressed all in black — but could not prove they were involved in the incident.

The victim could not provide a description of any of the suspects except to say one was about 5 feet, 6 inches tall and wore glasses.

He was not injured in the incident, no weapon was involved and nothing was taken, Morrison said.

The Silos have become AND been nothing but nice houses in a hood-like atmosphere. Such a shame...I have driven through there and saw street fights with at least 50 people fighting and running in all directions... teenager's party... I will be leaving Newton County as soon as I can...although I know it's everywhere...
