DOUGLASVILLE -- The Rockdale boys continued their outstanding track and field season last weekend. Paced by four championships and four runner-up finishes, Rockdale won the second annual East Manchester Invitational.
Lawrence Crawford led the way in the track events with a title in the 100 meters (10.91). His teammates followed suit as Jhibri Greer won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.92, Tyree Newton was the titleist in the 3,200 meters (10:17.89) and the Bulldogs' 800-sprint medley also took home a first-place finish, running in 1:37.18.
Chaz Mapp was runner-up in the 800 meters (2:01.29), Robert McCray was second in the shot put (47-01) while in the discus throw, Dennis Logan was runner-up (138-10) and teammate Keijne Thomas was third (128-02). Also placing high in other events for Rockdale were Newton (third in the 1,600 meters at 4:42.46), Malik Dawkins, who finished fourth in the 400 meters (50.97), the 1600-relay team (runner-up, 3:27.48) and the 400-relay team (fourth, 42.93).
The Rockdale girls were seventh, thanks to Antwonette Thomas, who won the 1,600 meters (5:32.40) and joined Mahalia Paul, Chasin Gladdis and Rachel Hayes on the third-place 800-sprint medley relay team (1:58.79). Oneisha Clennon was also runner-up in the discus throw (96-08.50) and Gladdis finished fourth in the 100 meters at 12.45 and fifth in the 200 meters (25.72).
Heritage track runs well at Starr's Mill
FAYETTEVILLE -- Both Heritage track and field teams had top 10 finishes, and Morgan Hubbard won a pair of races at last weekend's Friday Night Lights meet at Starr's Mill High School.
The girls placed ninth, thanks in large part to Hubbard, who had a huge night. She won the 100 meters, running in 12.58, and the 300-meter hurdles (46.67). Hubbard wasn't alone as Lyric Bolden was runner-up in the 200 meters (27.11) and placed fourth in the 100 meters at 13.20, while Dejsa Robinson ran in 16.07 to place third in the 100-meter hurdles.
The Heritage boys finished seventh as a team, led by Myles Hunter, who won the 300-meter hurdles at 39.02 and was runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles (14.75). Plenty of other Patriots placed high at the meet, including Dayo Akendela, who was second in the long jump (21-08.25) and fourth in the triple jump (42-03.50). Marquis Davis was a runner-up in the discus throw (129-00) and C.J. Stone finished fifth in the 200 meters (22.94).
