COVINGTON — The Covington YMCA is preparing for the 12th annual Covington Cheerios Challenge on Saturday, April 20, which will include a 10K/5K road race and a 1-mile fun run/walk.

Everyone is encouraged to participate. The events will be held at the YMCA on Newton Drive in Covington. The 10K race begins at 7:30 a.m. The 1-mile fun run/walk will be at 9 a.m. and the 5K at 9:30 a.m.

The Cheerios Challenge is a USA Track and Field Certified — AJC Peachtree Road Race Qualifier. This is the 12th year that the YMCA has worked in partnership with General Mills and other local businesses to create this community event.

“Participation in this event has grown tremendously in these 11 years” said Kacie Brown, YMCA membership director. “It is an exciting day for the YMCA and for our community. In 2012, we had a record-setting turnout of runners and walkers and are expecting even more participants in 2013. We appreciate the hard work of our 103 volunteers who come out to make this event possible. The excitement and support around the Covington Cheerios Challenge is contagious. We are also excited to announce that the Cheerios No. 31 race car will be at our event this year, which will be a great addition.”

The Cheerios Challenge is a part of the YMCA’s annual Healthy Kids Day Celebration. Registration runs through April 12. Registration packages, depending on the events selected, run from $15 to $45. Registration runs all the way up to race day, with packages ranging from $20 to $60.
