Rockdale track teams highlight Morehouse Relays

ATLANTA -- A number of local track and field athletes fared well at last weekend's Morehouse Relays.

The Rockdale boys had an excellent two days, led by the championship distance medley relay team as Jonathan Butler, Chaz Mapp, Tyree Newton and William Scott ran in 11:21.76. The Bulldogs also got a runner-up finish from the 3,200-meter relay team (Alonzo Allen, Cliff Cassura, Malik Dawkins and Zack Hess, 8:20.34) and fourth-place finishes from the 400 relay team (Lawrence Crawford, Jhibri Greer, Isaah McClinton and Mario Smith, 43.85), the 1,600 relay team (Allen, Cassura, Dawkins and Mapp, 3:26.18) and the 1,600 sprint medley relay team (Crawford, Dawkins, Mapp and McClinton, 3:46.30).Individually, Kejine Thomas placed third in the discus (139-09), Robert McCray was fourth in the shot put (42-07), Dennis Logan was fourth in the discus (123-08) and James Cummings was fifth in the triple jump (41-10.50).The Rockdale girls achieved elite status when their 1,600 sprint medley team of Chasin Gladdis, Ke'Audria Lewis, Mahalia Paul and Antwonette Thomas ran in 4:20.77 to reach a National Silver Standard. The Bulldogs' distance medley relay team (Chloe Brown, Kyandi Lattimer, Elizabeth Lowes and Antwonette Thomas) placed third at 14:08.79, and Gladdis was third in the 100 meters (12.63) and Rachel Hays placed fifth in the long jump (15-04.50).

Salem's Rafeeq Badee was runner-up in the shot put (43-09), while Christian Bagby finished tied for fifth in the long jump (20-02.75).

The Salem girls got third-place finishes from Trentkel Clements (4-06 in high jump) and the 3200 relay team (Asia Hicks, Jordan Marshall, Brianna Smith and Daria Woods, 10:50.34), and a fourth-place finish from Kendra Jenkins, who ran an 18.02 in the 100-meter hurdles (18.02).

In the Barberitas Track Classic at Warrior Stadium in Watkinsville, the Eastside girls had five first-place finishes with the boys taking the top spot in once as the Lady Eagles had 87.5 points for fourth place with the boys scoring 48 points to take seventh place.

Winning for the girls individually were Dallas Worthy in the 400 (57.48), Nylah Chavis in the high jump (5-06), Corin Stokes in the long jump (17.04) and Breanna Thornton in the triple jump (34-01).

Chavis also had a second place finish behind Thornton in the triple jump with a distance of 33-06.25.

Coming in third place were Rhodelle Lewis in the 800 (2:35.60), Thornton in the 400 (1:02.68) and Stokes in the 100 (12.93).

As as a team, the Eastside girls won the 4x400 with a time of 4:07.44. Running for the Lady Eagles were Thornton, Stokes, Myra Johnson and Worthy.

Winning the only event for the Eastside boys was Darvelle Smith who won the 110-hurdles in a time of 15.64.

Taking third place in the long jump was Lorenzo James in the 300 (41.25) and Jamal Hardge in the long jump (20-05.25) with Derrick Johnson (high jump -- 6-00), Bryant Johnson (shot put -- 42-02) the 4x400 (3:32.28) and 4x100 (44.73) relay team coming in fourth.
