COVINGTON -- Sam Johnson finished in the top half in each of his 10 competitions to take an overall third-place finish for Troy University in the decathlon while competing in the three-day Shamrock Invitational at the campus of Coastal Carolina.
Johnson, a former Eastside athlete in track, cross country and baseball, earned 5,883 points to take third place. Winning the decathlon with 6,187 points was Nathan Saliga of Michigan Tech followed by Army's Christopher Kittle who had 5,197 points.
His best event was the javelin throw where he not only won it with a toss of 163-feet, 3-inches, but beat his nearest competitor, John Todd of Slippery Rock University, by more than 26 feet. Todd had a throw of 138-8. Johnson also had a third-place finish in the 1,500 (4:41.79), two fourth-place finishes (long jump -- 20-.25 and pole vault -- 12-11.5), three fifth-places (110-hurdles -- 17.24, shot put -- 33-6 and 100 -- 11.73) and three sixth-places (discus -- 95-8, high jump -- 5-5.75 and 400 50.61).
