MOUNT AIRY -- It was a bounce-back day for the Heritage girls soccer team Saturday. Faith Shelton and Haley Wells each had a goal and assist, and the Patriots defeated Habersham Central 3-0.
Heritage, which had its five-game winning streak to start the season snapped with a Thursday loss at Grayson, improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in Region 8-AAAAA.
The Patriots scored twice in the opening half. Sarah Boggus was tackled from behind in the penalty box, and Wells took the penalty shot and scored for a 1-0 lead. Wells found Shelton for a goal to make it a 2-0 game at halftime.
In the second half, Shelton fed Haley Elliot for the final tally of the day.
Despite the win, Heritage coach Chad Suddeth is hoping for more improvement with tough games coming up at North Oconee at 5:30 p.m. today and home against Flowery Branch on Friday.
"I wouldn't say that I was real pleased with the effort today, but it was a result," Suddeth said. "Maybe if it was three games in five days kind of deal, but we weren't particularly sharp (Saturday). We got a big week coming up, so our preparation the first half of the week needs to be a lot better if we're going to try and compete against Flowery Branch on Friday."
Goalkeeper Mady Carter made five saves for her fifth shutout and the Patriots' sixth of the season.
Heritage and Habersham Central played to a 3-3 tie in the nightcap. Andre Deas scored two goals for the Patriots, including the game-tying goal on a penalty kick.
Heritage improved to 5-1-1 in completing a 2-0-1 week that included a victory at Grayson.
"Good result (Saturday) after (a) tough, 2-1 ... win versus Grayson," Heritage coach Brandon Stewart said. The Heritage teams travel to North Oconee tonight with the girls game starting at 5:30 p.m.
