JONESBORO -- The Rockdale tennis teams made quite an impression on its new region foes Thursday. The Bulldogs dominated host Morrow, winning 5-0 in both boys and girls action in their first Region 2-AAAAAA matches.
Rockdale, having played in Region 8-AAAAA for years, moved up to the newly formed Class AAAAAA.
"Our first region match, we're still kind of unsure how this new region is going to shake out," Rockdale coach Stephen Sansing said. "We're kind of having to play them as we get to them."
The boys lost just two games all day as No. 1 singles player Patrick Sanders and No. 3 Logan Hull each won 8-0, while No. 2 Trey Hull was an 8-1 winner. In doubles play, Bruce Mitchell and Abenet Adisu picked up an 8-0 victory, and the No. 2 team of Cameron Dabro and Collin Shamley won 8-1.
In girls play, No. 1 Summer Walker and No. 2 Ciara Chesser each picked up 8-0 victories, while No. 3 Aliyah Byrd won 8-2.
The No. 1 doubles team of Gabby Church and Kyia Havens won 8-5 and the No. 2 team (Sydney Norton and Savannah Bryan) were 8-4 winners.
"I was definitely pleased how all the kids came out and really played well today. Today was our first, really warm day we've had in a while, so it was nice to get out and play in the sunshine," Sansing said. "Eight-game pro sets are a little different because you don't have time to lose the first set and come back. You can tell they were focused and came out ready to play.
Rockdale will try to improve to 2-0 in region play when they host Druid Hills at 4 p.m. Tuesday. It will be the first matches played on the Bulldogs' brand-new on-campus courts.
"It'll be the first time we've (played on campus) in about four of five years," Sansing said. "The county has given us a great facility, we've been using it for practice, but now it'll be nice to have a crowd out there, little more intimate (and) hopefully have a good match on Tuesday."
