COVINGTON -- Citizens of Covington, your local government is coming to you.
The city is inviting all residents to come to the first R.E.A.C.H. Covington event slated for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 23 at Nelson Heights Community Center, located at 7200 Laseter St.
R.E.A.C.H. stands for Respond, Educate, Assist, Celebrate, Host. It is the fulfillment of a campaign promise by Mayor Ronnie Johnston to hold community meetings throughout the city.
"It is an attempt to really bridge the gap with our citizens and build better relationships overall," he said.
Johnston said the event will be relaxed and informal, with various city department heads present. Elected officials have been invited as well. Tables will be set up for various departments, so residents can ask staff questions and pick up information about services. Johnston said information will also be provided to citizens about upcoming opportunities, such as workforce training, that will be offered in the city.
Hot dogs, soft drinks and cookies will be served.
He said the event is for "every citizen interested in getting to know their government better."
Johnston hopes to have R.E.A.C.H. meetings quarterly at different locations throughout the city to make it more convenient for residents to attend.
