Porterdale plans for St. Patrick's Day celebration

PORTERDALE — Porterdale is planning its biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebration yet, set to take place March 16.

In addition to the Tyler Head fundraising benefit, which will include an auction and Cow Chip Bingo, other events for the day will be live country music by Dustin Bragg, Wesley Cook and Thomas Tillman, a parade and wrestling.

“And rumor has it that there may be a leprechaun bathing in the river that day, and you know what happens to the water when they do that,” celebration organizer Tim Savage said. “I’ve heard it normally turns green, but that’s just a rumor.”

According to Savage, the parade will start at noon. Line-up will begin at 11:30 a.m. on East Palmetto Street near the Baptist Church. The parade will then go to Hemlock Street and into the downtown area.

“Once the parade reaches the downtown area, this is where the benefit will begin,” he said. “We will be having live music, inflatables for the kids and Platinum Championship Wrestling will have a match in the afternoon. Of course, our local establishments will be available for dining, including a low country boil cooked up by Bernie’s BBQ.”

Savage said there are still available slots for any individual or group who would like to participate in the parade.

“The more the merrier,” he said, adding that highlights so far include a float from the wrestlers, Georgia Jeepers, Newton Trails, Covington Bikers and a high school band.

Anyone who would like to participate in the parade should call Porterdale City Hall at 770-786-2217 and ask for Martha Cain.

The wrestling match will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Seats around the stage and wrestling ring are being sold at $25 in advance and $30 the day of the show. A ticket includes a T-shirt.

Savage said they are encouraging donations for the auction that will benefit the Head family, as well as participation in the other fundraising events.

The timetable for the day’s events is:

• 1 to 2 p.m. — Wesley Cook

• 2 to 3 p.m. — Auction and Cow Chip Bingo
