COVINGTON — Countless heads of hair have been clipped, colored and coiffed at Wain & Co. Hair Design, but after nearly 30 years in the same location the business is closing its doors.

Wain Stowe, owner of Wain & Co., said last week he had decided to pull up stakes from his longtime location in Newton Plaza and set up shop with Steve Owenby at Just A Hair Better on Pace Street.

Stowe said he got the notion to become a barber as a young man working in a barber shop on Church Street, and his career choice has served him well.

“I started shining shoes at Church Street Barber Shop here in Covington in 1963,” Stowe said. “I always wanted to be a barber, and I told Mr. Alton Johnson that I was going to come back to Covington and be a barber, and I did.”

Stowe, who graduated from Newton County High School, raised his two daughters, Kori Hall and Ida Goddard, here. Kori worked in the hair design business with him for five years. With the shop closing, she’s moved to Profiles in Conyers, Stowe said.

Asked whose hair he has been cutting the longest in Covington, Stowe had to think a while before deciding it was Johnny Chestnut.

“He started coming to me before I went into business,” Stowe said. “I’ve been cutting in Covington since 1981.”

Over the years, Stowe said he’s cut hair for men, women and children — “Anybody who would sit still,” he said.

After a brief vacation, Stowe said he’ll be back behind the barber chair at Just A Hair Better starting Thursday.

Other members of the staff at Wain & Co. have also moved on. According to Stowe, Yvonne Haymore is now at Wattie’s. Lisa Montgomery, Carla Rodman and Mikelyn Womack are joining Stowe at Just A Hair Better.
