Students celebrated Dr. Seuss' 109th birthday, which was Saturday, at schools on Friday by dressing up like Seuss characters, reading Dr. Seuss books and having guest readers share their favorite stories. Retired teacher Lee Aldridge dressed up as the Cat in the Hat, as she's done for about the past 15 years, and visited Heard-Mixon Elementary school. She read "The Sneetches and Other Stories" to second-grade students in Robin Lackey's class on Friday morning. Other readers included those from the Newton County Sheriff's Office, the Covington Police Department, family members and former teachers, among other community volunteers. Students also each brought in a gently used book and swapped them with other classmates. Staff Photo: Michelle Floyd
