CONYERS -- Pitching let down the Rockdale team on Wednesday. The hurlers combined to hit six batters and added several more walks as Tuscaloosa easily defeated Post 77 13-8 at Henson-Carr Legion Field.
"Our pitching has been pretty good so far this season," Post 77 manager Demarco Hamm said. "But (Wednesday) was just one of those days. Some days you come out a pitcher and some days you just don't have it."
One thing Rockdale didn't have a trouble doing was hitting the ball as they combined for 16 hits including David Mayo and Zack Bailey doubles.
Post 34 took advantage of several Rockdale mistakes to take a 9-0 lead in the third inning. One of Tuscaloosa's runs scored when a batter was hit with bases loaded. Another three runs came when a base hit resulted in a home run following a fielding error.
"It doesn't matter if it's an area game or not an area game; we have to hustle," Hamm said. "That's just how I've always played baseball and how to play baseball period. There's a lot that can be learned in this game."
Even though Rockdale was down by nine runs, it wasn't ready to throw in the towel. Cameron Ragsdale put Post 77 on the board first when an RBI single plated Evan Alderman. Rockdale continued to hit the Tuscaloosa pitchers with Jake Wright, Hunter Ballard, Joshua Smith and Bailey all getting RBIs to make it 9-5.
However, lackadaisical play continued to plague the Rockdale defense, allowing Post 34 to score three more runs by the fifth inning.
Rockdale continued to battle on offense in the final inning. Trailing 13-6, Post 77 fought back scoring two more runs.
"We were kind of flat," Hamm said. "I think it was a wakeup call. We needed it and I think they got the message."
Rockdale will be back on the field on Saturday in Dawsonville with a trip to Loganville on Sunday before taking a week off.
