TGBA Blue rallies late for win

TGBA Blue and Heritage rising sophomore Matt Studdard snapped a 3-3 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh and defeated Georgia Select Navy and its three local players (Salem's Akil Baddoo and Austin Holloway and Josh Sims of Eastside) 5-3 at Pinecrest Academy. Monday, TGBA Blue erased an early deficit and scored seven runs in the third inning to defeat the D-Bat Mustangs-Raine (Dallas, Texas) 10-6.

TGBA Blue, which got seven strikeouts in six innings pitched from Studdard in a win over the Atlanta Bluejays earlier in the tournament, moved to 5-1 and stayed tied with two teams atop its pool.

TGBA Red dropped its first game of the tournament Tuesday, 6-5 to NBS 15-Under. TGBA is still leading its pool by a game and can clinch the pool and a spot in Thursday's round of 16 with a win today against the Excel Bluejays at 11:30 a.m. back at Pinecrest.

Jeff Sweat, a rising sophomore at Rockdale, helped TGBA Red to a win Monday, driving in two runs in an 8-5 victory over GBC Prepstars.

TGBA Red includes Covington native and Piedmont Academy rising sophomore Noah Quick and players from 15 other Georgia high schools, along with a player each from Mississippi and Michigan.

Elsewhere in the Wood Bat Tournament, Team Elite Grey jumped out to a 7-0 lead and hung on for an 11-5 victory over the Windham Wildcats at Marietta High School.

Team Elite Grey, which includes local players Mason Calloway of Newton, who had an RBI on Tuesday, and Salem's Jason Howell, evened its tournament record at 3-3.

Anthony Williams of Heritage drew two walks and stole a base and Alcovy's Austin Richardson added a stolen base of his own in Team Demarini's 4-2 victory over Black Mamba Baseball Club at Mount Pisgah High School.

Team Demarini is 2-3-1 heading into today's final set of pool games. The 15-Under playoffs begin Thursday.
