CUMMING - Jeff Sweat and TGBA Red continued to roll in the World Wood Bat 15-Under National Championship Tournament. Sweat, a rising sophomore at Rockdale, had two RBIs and TGBA moved to 5-0 in pool play with an 8-5 victory over GBC Prepstars Monday at Pinecrest Academy.
TGBA, a travel team based out of Marietta, will try to stay unbeaten when its plays NBS 15-Under (Acworth) Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at Pinecrest.
TGBA, which includes Covington native and rising sophomore at Piedmont Academy, Noah Quick, and players from 15 other Georgia high schools, along with a player each from Mississippi and Michigan, is in control of its own destiny in its pool and needs only to win today and Wednesday in another 11:30 a.m. game at Pinecrest against the Excel Bluejays to clinch the pool championship and secure a spot in Thursday’s Round of 16.
Elsewhere Monday at the WWBA 15-Under Tournament, TGBA Blue and Heritage rising sophomore Matt Studdard erased an early deficit and scored seven runs in the third inning to defeat the D-Bat Mustangs-Raine (Dallas, Texas), 10-6.
TGBA Blue, which got seven strike outs in six innings pitched from Studdard in a win over the Atlanta Bluejays earlier in the tournament, stayed tied with two other teams atop its pool at 4-1 with the victory and will play Georgia Select Navy and its three local players (Salem’s Akil Baddoo and Austin Holloway and Josh Sims of Eastside) Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. at Pinecrest.
