Expectant mothers living in east metro now have even more options when it comes to choosing a midwife. Covington Women's Health Specialists, a practice offering obstetrical and gynecological services, operated by Dr. Cathy Larrimore, has expanded to include the services of two certified nurse midwives -- Lynn Stock and Janice Joiner. Certified nurse midwives are registered nurses who have completed a nurse-midwifery training program and have passed a certification exam to earn the title of certified nurse-midwife.

The practice, located at 4181 Hospital Drive, adjacent to Newton Medical Center, now serves women seeking gynecological care in one suite, and mothers-to-be in a separate wing next door. Each section has its own entrance from the street level.

"A lot of times when women are expecting and they're sitting in rooms with others who are expecting it's just more comfortable," said Connie Hughes, practice administrator.

The two different offices each offer six treatment rooms, with ultrasound and lab rooms available at each location. The obstetrical office also offers a room where an expectant mother can have her heart, as well as the baby's heart, monitored. The room features two recliners and a television.

Hughes said that the nurse midwives joined the practice in January.

"Midwifery care is a more personalized touch and they spend more time with the patients," said Hughes, who added that the practice is the only one to offer two separate offices for gynecology services and obstetrics services. "More women are choosing to go that way."

Larrimore is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1988 and from Emory University School of Medicine in 1992.

Larrimore practiced general medicine for four years before completing her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Naval Medical Center in Virginia. After serving for three years as a faculty member and staff OB/GYN at the Naval Medical Center, she returned to the Atlanta area where she opened her private practice in 2004 in Covington.

Larrimore is assisted in her practice by Kerry G. Dewberry, who earned a master's degree in nursing from the University of Michigan in 2002. Dewberry, who relocated to the Atlanta area in 2005, specializes in women's health and has an interest in urogynecology.

Lynn Stock practiced for 13 years in western New York as a women's health nurse practitioner, and then as a certified nurse-midwife. She relocated to Atlanta in 2009.

Janice Joiner practiced midwifery in Camden County, Ga. for more than 10 years.

Prior to joining Larrimore's practice, Stock and Joiner practiced at Piedmont Fayette Hospital.
