School board to meet for combined meeting

COVINGTON -- The Newton County Board of Education will hold just one meeting this month.

Instead of a normal separated work session and regular monthly meeting, it will hold a combined meeting Tuesday.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the board room at the Newton County BOE building, which also is located at the Newton Drive location.

At the meeting, the board is expected to approve a final budget for the 2013-14 school year, which begins July 1.

In May, the board approved a $149.5 million tentative budget. The board is still considering changes to Ombudsman alternative school transportation and the addition or rearranging of school nurses.

The proposed budget, which takes about $6 million from reserves, includes four furlough days for staff, instead of the current six, and some teachers may receive a step increase because the state has a minimum salary requirement.

Also on the board's agenda for Tuesday are various contracts for next school year, a waiver for alternative education and a class size resolution.

The meeting is the last one for retiring Superintendent Gary Mathews. Incoming Superintendent Samantha Fuhrey is scheduled to take over later this month, after Mathews leaves following Tuesday's meeting.

The school board will hold another combined meeting on July 16. It will return to a normal meeting schedule for August through November and hold another combined meeting in December.

I hope the public is paying very close attention to who is approved to be the second counselor at Newton College and Career Academy at this Tuesday meeting and I hope that someone does an open records on who all applied for the position and what their credentials are.

They can't wait to pull this 6 million out of reserve and spend it because they know when they spend theirselves into a bind they can just raise tax again.

GARY MATHEWS PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY YOU ARE RECOMMENDING TO THE BOE TO TAKE SIX MILLION OUT OF RESERVES OF TAXPAYER MONEY?

  1. Why are they using SIX MILLION of OUR taxpayer funded reserves where was this during the budget hearings? I say take this board to task on this at Tuesday night's meeting our elected officials are running wild in Newton County.

  2. Where are the results of the EOCTS? Math EOCTS? Where are they?

  3. What is truly going on with hiring for the counseling position at NCCA? Get transparent and tell us. If someone is going to be approved for that job at the June 25th meeting then explain. I have complained about this and no one seems to know anything now is that suspicious or what?

The only way to deal with these elected bodies is through blogs so thank you Newton Citizen for being a sound board.

Mathews is probably waiting till he leaves town June 25th after the 7 p.m. meeting to have them put these scores out he has tried to spin scores for 3 years so it would look like he improved our system and the covington news is silly enough to bite on it. Grad rates are bad math scores are bad so bad they won't even put it out.

Don't be surprised if Mathews shows back up in the school system as a contract or temporary employee. Several in Ga have retired to take advantage of the retirement in place before it changes only to hire back as non state employees in some capacity.

RV30015, I hope you don't really expect to get an answer to your question. Can you say "lame duck". G. Matthew is hanging around long enough to collect his last pay check & heading back home.

Why are people so upset about the second counselor position at the career academy? Everyone is talking about that and the other expected personnel recommendations for Tuesday. I'm more concerned that the school system is taking out six million dollars in reserves. I guess Gary Matthews is the new six million dollar man. I was told nothing has been mentioned about 6 million dollars in the budget meetings up to now so what is this all about?
