COVINGTON -- The Covington/Newton County Dive Team was searching the water at Factory Shoals Park for a possible drowning victim as of press time late Thursday afternoon.
A juvenile male, age unconfirmed, was swimming in the Alcovy River with his family when he went under the water and did not resurface, according to Newton County Fire Chief Kevin O'Brien.
As of about 5:30 p.m., O'Brien said the dive team had been searching for the boy for around 45 minutes. The first unit on the scene also attempted to locate the boy.
Covington and Newton County fire departments along with Newton County Sheriff's Office were on the scene. The Department of Natural Resources was expected to bring an underwater sonar device to help with the operation, O'Brien said.
"The water's up quite a bit because of the rain, it's up two or three feet higher than normal," he said. "The shoals themselves are pretty rough. We're just below the shoals ... It's a pretty rough current right now."
