Bond denied for May armed robbery suspects

COVINGTON -- A Newton County judge has denied bond for two armed robbery suspects from Rockdale County who allegedly robbed a Newton County mother last month while she was putting her toddler in her vehicle.

Karlos Blake Washington, 23, and Zekelia Samone Sanders, 24, both of 4404 Harvest Grove Lane, were arrested last month and charged with armed robbery and two counts of cruelty to children in the third degree. Washington was also found to be wanted out of DeKalb County for child support default.

The victim, a 25-year-old woman, was in the parking lot of the Summerset apartment complex on Salem Road around 7:30 a.m. and was in the process of placing her toddler in her vehicle when she was approached from behind by a male, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office. He ordered her to the ground and took her purse.

She saw him run to the passenger side of a gray Dodge Durango being drive by a female, so the victim jumped in her car and was able to catch up to the vehicle and get the tag number to alert authorities.

The man and woman were later arrested. A 4-year-old child was in the apartment at the time of the arrest, and as they were transported to the Newton County Sheriff's Office and waiting for the grandmother to pick up the child, the child made the statement that his daddy took the purse, alerting authorities that the child was also in the car at the time of the robbery.

Newton County Superior Court Judge Eugene Benton denied bond for the two at their June 4 bond hearing for the three felony counts for being a risk to committing new felonies and being a danger to the community, according to court records.
