COVINGTON — A 14-year-old boy drowned in the Alcovy River at Factory Shoals Park Thursday, said Newton Fire Chief Kevin O’Brien.
The body of Brandon Talley of Covington was recoverd by the Covington/Newton County Dive Team at around 6 p.m. after about a one and a half hour search. Talley was at the park with family and friends. He went under the water and never resurfaced, O’Brien said. Every indication is that it was an accidental drowning, he said.
The body was found in water about 12 to 15 feet deep, O’Brien said.
Covington and Newton County fire departments and Newton County Sheriff’s Office were on the scene. An underwater sonar device was supplied by the Department of Natural Resources to help locate the body. Authorities were preparing to use it when the body was located.
“The water’s up quite a bit because of the rain, it’s up two or three feet higher than normal,” he said while the search was underway. “The shoals themselves are pretty rough. We’re just below the shoals ... It’s a pretty rough current right now.”
Family and friends were in the water attempting to locate the boy when the first unit responded to the scene and had to be pulled from the water, O’Brien said. First responders entered the water to try and locate the boy, he said.
